The problem isn’t that business plans are boring.

It’s that most of them feel like homework.

Mine doesn’t.

Never.

People want the business. They want the sales.

And the business plan; That’s the broccoli.

Its necessary and good for you.

But it’s not exactly the bit you’re excited about.

And because it feels like broccoli…

Most people either don’t write one…

…or they write one once, and never open it again.

I think we’ve been told the wrong job description.

Somewhere along the way, business plans became these enormous documents you write to impress someone else.

The bank, an investor, your accountant or whoever.

But if you’re building your own business, your business plan only has one job.

Help YOU make better decisions.

Here’s where I see people getting themselves into trouble.

…without ever putting it up for sale.

You can spend two months designing a website…

…without telling a single person it exists.

Planning feels productive because your brain gets a lovely little dopamine hit every time you tick a box.

The problem is your bank account has absolutely no interest in beautifully organised plans.

It only gets excited when people buy things.
